  100 Storybooks Project

The ‘100 Storybooks Project’ is one of the projects developed to fulfill the Minister’s directive to provide packs containing 100 storybooks Foundation classrooms to create classroom libraries. In line with the Literacy Strategy from National Department of Education, the Eastern Cape Department of Education has sent out a Circular to Primary Schools (signed by the SG) to inform the Schools about the “Drop All and Read” project launched by the Minister of Education on the 17th of January to promote Reading for enjoyment.

The National Department of Education has identified 5 Districts in the Eastern Cape and the 100 Books (in a cupboard) were delivered to the schools in the Districts. Schools received three cupboards per school.

How the books are used:

  1. It is used for enjoyment by the learners. During a certain period of the day all learners take a book and read.
  2. When the learners are finished with their work, they are allowed to take a book to read.
  3. The teacher reads stories to the learners
  4. The teachers let older children e.g. the Grade 7 learners come and read the stories to the learners.
  5. Some teachers use the books for remedial purposes (as the books range from very easy-no script but just pictures to a number of lines). The teacher can establish at what level the child is reading and give her an easier or more advanced book to read
  6. Children read in groups or pairs.
  7. The schools received three cupboards. The books in the cupboards are different and next year the teachers will exchange books.
  8. In the one school the Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT) is Afrikaans and the First Additional Language (FAL) is English, but there were also IsiXhosa books. The learners in the school who understand IsiXhosa (Grade 3 in the class visited) also read the IsiXhosa books. The other learners predict the story and talk about it.
